W9ND Strategic Framework

A New Vision for West Kowloon

Project : Planning Consultancy Services as well as Landscape and Urban Design Study for Multi-Purpose Sports Complex at Kai Tak

Year: 2008

Client: Private NGO

Location: West Kowloon, Hong Kong

This planning study analyzed and proposed strategies to regenerate the older urban districts of Sham Shui Po, Yau Tsim Mong and Kowloon City. This involved the creation of community revitalisation plans for these Western Kowloon districts to improve the quality of life for local residents and visitors’ experience. By exploring ways to integrate the newer waterfront developments and the proposed developments of the West Kowloon Cultural District and Kai Tak Development, this proposed strategy aimed to create better places and opportunities for all. These new developments would act as catalysts to reactivate and strengthen the surrounding older urban districts, offering economic livelihood and improved quality of life.

Our proposals included adaptive reuse, community facilities, open space and linking landscaped boulevards from the hinterland to the harbourfront with promenades along the waterfront served by ferries and water taxis. The waterfront promenades would connect to form a continuous accessible promenade offering active land-marine interface along the harbourfront.
